Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) has received a contract for the construction of two additional Project 1135.6 follow-on ships for the Indian Navy, the Indian Ministry of Defence announced on 30 January.
The vessels will be constructed under an inter-governmental agreement signed between India and Russia in October 2016.
The follow-on P 1135.6 series of frigates, customised to meet the Indian Navy’s specific requirements, will feature a special hull design to limit radar cross-section, low electromagnetic, infrared and under water noise signatures. The ships will also be equipped with weapons and sensors including sonar system, Brahmos missile system and combat management system.
The two ships will be constructed under Russian assistance with scheduled delivery in June 2026 and December 2026. The vessels will be equipped to operate in littoral and blue waters; both as a single unit and as escorts of a naval task force.
