India begins sea trials of INS Vikramaditya after refit

1-1

The Indian Navy (IN) began sea trials of INS Vikramaditya (ex- Admiral Gorshkov ), its sole 44,750 tonne refurbished Kiev-class carrier on 23 October, following completion of its second refit after joining service in 2014.

The INR 705 crores (USD96 million) five-month long retrofit executed by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), on India’s south west coast, included replacing 16 of 25 bearings of the carriers’ four power propeller shafts and repainting and treating its hull and other ‘spaces’, officials said.

“During routine check-ups we found that some temperature readings in the [power] shafts were going high, so we had to drydock [the carrier] to check the condition of their bearings” Vikramaditya ’s commanding officer Captain Puruvir Das told The Hindu newspaper on 20 October.
