Advantage :  Tejas Mk-1

Positive Limit Load Factor :

Tejas Mk-1 : + 8 G

Gripen C/D  : +9 G

Advantage :  Gripen C/D

Thrust / Weight Ratio ( TWR ) :

Tejas Mk-1 : 1.02

Gripen C/D : 0.97

Advantage :  Tejas Mk-1

Air-to-Air Refueling :

Tejas Mk-1 :  Yes

Gripen C/D  : Yes

Gripen C/D  : 3

Advantage :  TIE

Main Gun :

Tejas Mk-1 : 1× mounted 23 mm twin-barrel GSh-23 cannon with 220 rounds of ammunition

Gripen C/D  : 1 × 27 mm Mauser BK-27 revolver cannon with 120 rounds

Advantage :  TIE . Tejas Mk-1 carries more ammunition rounds but Gripen C/D carries slightly higher caliber gun so overall its a Tie .

Flight Control System (FCS ):

Tejas Mk-1 : Quadruplex digital fly-by-wire

Gripen C/D : Triplex digital fly-by-wire

Advantage :  Tejas Mk-1 , because Quadruplex FBW is more Advanced than Triplex FBW which means Tejas will be easier to fly and control compared to Gripen C/D  .

Helmet Mounted Sight :

Tejas Mk-1  : YES

Gripen C/D  :  YES

Advantage :  TIE

Composite Material Usage in Air-frame :

Tejas Mk-1 : 45 %

Gripen C/D : 25 %

Advantage :  Tejas Mk-1 . High Composite Usage makes Air-frame stronger and reduces Radar Cross Section (RCS) .

Radar System :

Tejas Mk-1 : EL/M-2032 Pulse-Doppler Multi Mode Radar

Gripen C/D : PS-05/A  Pulse-Doppler Multi Mode Radar

Advantage :  TIE . Both carries Multi Mode Radars (MMR) of almost similar Range .

Wing Loading :

Tejas Mk-1 : 247 kg/m²

Gripen C/D : 283 kg/m²

Advantage :  Tejas Mk-1 . Lower wing loading means more Agility to Turn tighter during Dogfights .

Conclusion :

While Gripen C/D has better max payload capacity , speed, combat radius and G rating  , the Tejas Mk-1 comes with more advanced Flight Control System , higher percentage of Composites usage in airframe , Lower RCS ( radar cross section ),  Lighter airframe with better Thrust-to-weight Ratio , Larger wing Area (useful for low speed maneuvers )  & lower wing loading ( better turn rate ) compared to Gripen C/D .

Tejas Mk-1 also offers cost & quantitative advantage because in price of one Gripen C/D a country can field Two Tejas Mk-1  . Tejas Mk-1 has ZERO Crashes till date and being equipped with better Flight Control System makes it safer and easier to fly .

From the above comparison & analysis , we can conclude that each of these fighters has its own advantages & disadvantages compared to the other in some areas . In the end , Buyer country’s requirements , budget & preference will decide which one of these two jets is a better choice for procurement of Light fighters .

Please Note :

  • Specification & Performance data for both aircraft were derived from reliable sources.
  • The weights of the armaments were not included as the RATIOS and DIFFERENCES   BETWEEN BOTH AIRCRAFT will remain the same if they will be armed with the same type and same number of armaments.
