India will stand by Bangladesh during any crisis

Indian naval ship INS Sumitra dropped anchor at Chittagong port on Thursday morning with relief supplies and the 33 Bangladeshi fishermen it rescued from the Bay of Bengal.

India will always come forward to help Bangladesh when a natural disaster strikes, said Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Harsh Vardhan Shringla on Thursday.

Speaking at the cyclone relief handover ceremony at Chittagong port, the indian envoy said: “We express our deep condolence for the people who died during the cyclonic storm Mora. A ship has arrived from India with the relief materials for the people affected by the cyclonic storm. The relief materials include packaged foods, tents, blankets and medicines.”

Chittagong Deputy Commissioner Zillur Rahman Chowdhury formally received the relief supplies from the Indian high commissioner.

Indian naval ship INS Sumitra dropped anchor at the port around 7:30am on Thursday with the relief supplies as well as the 33 Bangladeshi fishermen that the Indian Navy rescued from the Bay of Bengal.

Shringla appreciated the Bangladesh government’s disaster management efforts and said the damage could have been much worse if the government had not taken adequate precautionary measures.

“We have kept other ships on standby so they can stand in good stead for the country, including distribution of relief materials,” he said.

The high commissioner also thanked Bangladesh Navy, Chittagong district administration and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the cooperation for relief distribution activities.

Speaking to reporters, Chittagong Deputy Commissioner, Zillur Rahman Chowdhury said the relief material would be distributed to the cyclone-hit people in the coastal areas of Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar.

Thanking the Indian government for the relief, Zillur said another ship from India was on its way to Chittagong port with relief supplies.

The rescued Bangladeshi fishermen were also formally handed over to Bangladesh Navy in the ceremony.

The Indian navy ship was carrying relief supplies to Bangladesh when it came across the survivors and a dead body.

The fishermen are all from Moheshkhali upazila of Cox’s Bazar. They went missing when severe cyclonic storm Mora hit Bangladesh coast on Tuesday.
