After a brief lull, the Pakistan Army on Tuesday evening opened heavy fire and shot 120 mm mortars on forward Indian villages and posts along the Line of Control (LoC) in Nowshera sector of Rajouri district in Jammu and Kashmir.
Defence spokesperson Lt Colonel Manish Mehta said the Pakistani army initiated indiscriminate firing of small arms, automatics, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars around 6.30 pm.
The Indian army posts are retaliating strongly and effectively. The firing is on, he added.
An intelligence source said the Pakistan Army was targetting Lam and Pukharni areas of the Nowshera sector.
Pakistan had opened unprovoked fire at forward villages in the same areas on Monday night too.
However, there were no reports of any casualties.
“Ceasefire violation by Pakistan took place at Ans and Bhandaar at 10.55pm (Monday). Lam and Kalsian areas were also affected,” Rajouri deputy commissioner Dr Shahid Iqbal Choudhary told Hindustan Times.
He also informed that the figures of villagers from Sarya, Khamba, Anwas Bhandar and Bhawani in various relief camps swelled to 1,720 from 1,674 on Tuesday.
“Today, BJP MP Jugal Kishore along the local BJP MLA Ravinder Raina extensively toured the border area and also met villagers in various camps (after Monday night’s firing),” a police official said on Tuesday.
Intense Pakistani shelling in Nowshera sector since May 11 has left three civilians dead and 10 injured triggering ugly skirmishes between the two neighbours along the de-facto border.
Meanwhile, state Congress chief spokesperson and former MLC Ravinder Sharma urged the government to ensure adequate facilities to border migrants in the camps at Nowshera and take up the construction of bunkers in their localities on war footing to make their return possible in near future.
Sharma said the border residents of Nowshera areas had to repeatedly suffer and migrate time and again in view of the continued ceasefire violations by Pakistan.
He said Pakistan violated the ceasefire more than 1,345 times during the last three years.
